What Is Pelvic Organ Prolapse (POP)?

Pelvic organ prolapse occurs when one or more pelvic organs descend from their normal position and press into the vaginal walls. This happens due to weakness or damage in the pelvic floor muscles, connective tissues, and ligaments that support the pelvic organs.

Prolapse can develop gradually and is most commonly associated with:

  • Pregnancy and vaginal childbirth
  • Menopause and reduced oestrogen levels
  • Repetitive heavy lifting or high-impact exercise
  • Chronic constipation or persistent coughing
  • Previous pelvic surgery

Common symptoms include:

  • A sensation of heaviness or dragging in the pelvis
  • Feeling or seeing a bulge in the vagina
  • Pelvic or lower back discomfort
  • Bladder or bowel symptoms (leakage, urgency, incomplete emptying)
  • Discomfort during intercourse

Types of Pelvic Organ Prolapse

Pelvic organ prolapse is classified based on which organ is affected:

Bladder Prolapse (Cystocele)

The bladder presses into the front wall of the vagina. This is the most common type and is often associated with urinary symptoms.

Uterine Prolapse

The uterus descends into the vaginal canal due to weakened support structures.

Rectocele

The rectum bulges into the back wall of the vagina, commonly linked with bowel emptying difficulties.

Vaginal Vault Prolapse

Occurs in women who have had a hysterectomy, when the top of the vagina loses support.

How Women’s Health Physiotherapy Helps Prolapse

Women’s Health Physiotherapy is considered a first-line treatment for pelvic organ prolapse, particularly in mild to moderate cases, and is also highly beneficial alongside medical or surgical management.

At Zyloh Physio, treatment focuses on restoring optimal pelvic floor function rather than simply managing symptoms.

Comprehensive Assessment

At Zyloh Physio, we begin with a detailed assessment of:

  • Pelvic floor muscle strength, coordination, and endurance
  • Breathing patterns and core muscle function
  • Posture and pressure management
  • Lifestyle and exercise habits

This allows us to create a personalised treatment plan tailored to your specific type and stage of prolapse.

Pelvic Floor Muscle Training

Targeted pelvic floor exercises improve strength, endurance, and coordination, helping the pelvic organs receive better support. Correct technique is essential—many women unknowingly perform these exercises incorrectly without professional guidance. At Zyloh Physio, we ensure you learn the right technique for safe and effective results.

Education & Lifestyle Strategies

We provide practical advice on:

  • Safe lifting and exercise modifications
  • Managing intra-abdominal pressure
  • Bladder and bowel habits
  • Returning to sport or high-impact activity safely

Our goal at Zyloh Physio is to empower you with the knowledge and confidence to manage your symptoms effectively.
